Poliça: Artist You Should Know

For the last week or so, Jason’s been playing a Minneapolis band called Poliça on Morning Becomes Eclectic. They may very well be the American answer to Denmark’s Quadron.

Like that group, Poliça creates a moody minimalistic downtempo R & B rooted by remarkably expressive and haunting  vocals.

That being said, despite its familiar sound (strains of early trip-hop DNA resonate in even track titles) Poliça has a real warm, virtually folky aspect that feels like it comes from their being from the Mid-West. It’s a brilliant fusion and sound that’s found it’s first true superstar and champion in Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon.

When asked by a Rolling Stone reporter at The Grammy Awards ceremony this past weekend who his favorite new artist was, he replied  ”I’ve been listening to this band Poliça from Minneapolis a lot lately…They’re the best band I’ve ever heard.” That’s about the most stunning compliment I imagine a small band (or ANY band) can get from an award winner on a night when lots of people are paying real close attention.

It’s great for them and bodes well for their LP “Give You The Ghost” available now via their website.

Their dizzying track “Wandering Star” (no relation to the Portishead track) is a real emotive stunner. Think 808s & Heartbreak, put replace the 808s with real drums and what sounds like a reverbed ukelele.
