What I Got at the Post Office Today with Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

A great week! KCRW’s Halloween Masquerade was uh-mazing. Stunning costumes, incredible music and KCRW DJ’s spinning great sets of tunes. I predict next year will sell out ever faster. This party is becoming THE Halloween party to hit in LA. Weather has been fantastic… though it looks like we’ll be hitting a cold spell this weekend. Break out the hoodies, winter is here.

Lots of good stuff at the post office this week. LOTS. Here are just a few morsels.

1) Beat LA – CD version of the upcoming double LP compilation due out on Record Store Day. Wrote about this one before, but it deserves a second mention mostly because it all benefits charity, and we like things that benefit charity. Cheers to Doctors Without Borders in their continued effort to help Haiti. New LA bands covering old LA bands. It’s a great comp. Plus, liner notes by Geza X. Bonus!

2) The Louvin Brothers “Satan Is Real/Handpicked Songs 1955-1962 – Great 2-cd compilation from one of the finest reissue labels reissuing music today, Light In The Attic. “The Satan Is Real LP backed with an all star cast of fans picking their favorites including Mark Lanegan, Beck, Emmylou Harris, Will Oldham, Jim James, Dolly Parton, Devendra Banhart and more.

3) 3:33 “Live From The Grove– Recorded at the legendary power people hot spot, Bohemian Grove in northern California near Sonoma. Avant instrumentals utilizing electronic and traditional instrumentation. Fans of everything from post rock poster boys Tortoise to electro minimalist post punk will find something to satiate their ears here.

4) Zun Zun Egui “Katang” – This one is new to me, but sounds right up my alley. A duo from Bristol who have shared stages with bands ranging form Tinariwen to Whitehouse. Very cool. Their one-sheet bio mentions “open ended rock music”, “mind frying” and “dust raising chaos,” which means they move toward the top of my “to listen” pile.

Honorable mentions include new discs from Carmen Rizzo, Peggy Sue and Niki & The Dove, with digital release of the week going to Afrolicious and their latest EP “A Dub For Mali”. I’m a sucker for anything Mali, even if it’s only mentioned in a title. Pretty sure Afrolicious are from Portugal, actually.

Don’t forget daylight savings ends this weekend. Add that extra hour to your clock on Saturday night and get an extra hour snooze time on Sunday morning. Best part about it? Not the extra hour of snooze time, but an extra hour of Mario Cotto! Who doesn’t love an extra hour of Mario Cotto?

Hear most of this goodness and so much more at 12a on Sunday night!

Cheers,

Chuck P.
