Death Cab for Cutie played a small private show for KCRW last month and we aired highlights from the session on Morning Becomes Eclectic this morning, including tracks from their new release and some old favorites.

Interestingly, in an interview with DJ Anne Litt, Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla talked quite a bit about how the band is the longest relationship they’ve ever had and how they’ve kept it going.

No doubt people will be reading into all of Ben’s comments now that the other relationship in his life – his marriage to actress/musician Zooey Deschanel – appears to be ending.

Back to Death Cab, Ben says many bands lose track of what makes them so special, that it’s the “sum of the parts” that make a band work.

“Everybody’s talented in their own ways, but when you put these particular people together, this thing happens. And it’s very specific and it’s valuable, so it’s probably one of the main reasons we’ve been together as long as we have.”

He also talked about what they learned watching the Foo Fighters play to a gigantic crowd, as well as their favorite books of the moment,
