What I Got at the Post Office Today with Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

What a week. So cold and rainy and then… a gorgeous Sunday! Plus, we’re supposed to hit 90 by mid week. That’s some serious variety!

Some wonderfully varied selections at the post office this week, too.

1) Wild Flag vinyl! – THANK YOU. GRACIAS. DANKA. Nothing says thank you like ‘thank you’ vinyl, especially when it’s one of my favorites for 2011. No bent corners either. Score!

2) Pageants EP – Finally, an official release from one of my new favorite LA bands. Nice homemade packaging too. Sweet. I don’t get nearly enough CDs tied up with twine. Nice call, folks.

3) Terra Lightfoot – Nice shoegazey pop from this relative newcomer. Haven’t heard much of this cd yet, but I like what I hear so far.

4) Gringo Star – Great name. Great quirky pop songs, too. Fans of Oh No Oh My, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Spinto Band and other quirky bands with quirky names that make quirky music will like these hipsters.

Honorable mentions include Paley & Francis (that’s Black Francis of The Pixies, for those keeping score), Boots Electro (that’s Jesse Hughes from Eagles Of Death Metal, for those keeping score) and Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree, for those… oh, you know) and digital release of the week goes to Beat LA, a new 2xLP set due out on Record Store Day in November that includes killer new bands from LA covering killer old bands from LA. Imaad Wasif covering the Doors, Boom Bip/Buck 65 covering Wall Of Voodoo & No Age covering Urinals are but a few highlights! Mmmmm mmmmm… can’t wait for Record Store Day… again!

Headed to London this week, so I won’t be on air next Sunday (you’re in excellent hands with Marion Hodges), but I’ll be back the Sunday before Halloween weekend with more awesomeness… musically speaking.

Cheers,
Chuck P.
