LA’s own Delta Spirit has new music on the horizon (next Spring!) and we have something special to hold us over until we can get our hands on it. They have a unique take on the Americana sound that we’ve been hearing so much of lately –much of it due to the vocal talents (and occasional growls) of singer Matthew Vasquez. So you can imagine, what would happen if they got in the studio where the legendary troubadour Tom Waits (who has his own new album out now) laid his hat? Well, you can hear the results on “The Waits Room” EP.

Stream “John Henry” and download the EP for free below.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

A note from the band:

“We recorded this EP of live takes in a room named after the man himself, Mr. Waits. It has a mural, an old radiator, a sliding barn door and a lot of songs in it.”

The EP includes 5 tracks: “The Flood”, “Bushwick Blues”, “Devil Knows You’re Dead”, “John Henry”, and “My Dream”.

You can see the Delta Spirit live THIS SUNDAY as part of the LA Weekly’s 3rd Annual LA101 event at the Gibson Amphitheater.  Also, on the bill: Airborne Toxic Event, Built to Spill and Tokyo Police Club. Find tickets and more info here.

We’ve had the band on Morning Becomes Eclectic twice – first in 2008 and then in 2010 – and it’s safe to say we’re pretty big fans.
