Fleet Foxes Live on KCRW – Grown Ocean

Written by

This is the first radio session Fleet Foxes have done in support of their sophomore album “Helplessness Blues” and I think we have an idea why – they’re not big fans of singing in the morning, jokingly calling our beloved show “Morning Becomes when it’s difficult to sing well” (or something along those lines). They seem to be pretty meticulous when it comes to their vocal harmonies, but we were totally enamored by them. It was a gorgeous set and the songs sounded even better live than on the album.

Like KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox said this morning on Twitter… it doesn’t get better than this live version of “Grown Ocean”.

Drummer J Tillman (also a solo artist) kept cracking jokes throughout the session and lightened the mood to where it felt like we were eavesdropping on the band just hanging out playing tunes.  They talked about the deeper themes behind the new album – saying it’s about “taking stock of where you’re at and how your impulses match up with your wants. Or how they don’t match up.”

Check out the full session in the archives, including great versions of “Mykonos”, “Battery Kinzie” and the title track “Helplessness Blues”.
