What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

You know the nightmare where you find yourself out in the middle of the ocean treading water with no land in site? How about the one where you’re speaking in public, and you suddenly realize you’re completely naked?

Combine the two and that’s how I felt last night while doing my show. My computer just wasn’t in the mood to work properly so I had to jump around with CDrs and the iPad like a circus clown. It was distracting to say the least, but the cloudy morning today has made up for it. Enough whining, on with the countdown.

1) The War On Drugs “Slave Ambient” – Excellent band in the vein of Dan Bejar’s Destroyer. The exciting blurb there in the photo is the fact that it’s also out on double LP. Nice!

2) Rebecca Pidgeon “Slingshot + 7” – love it when a CD comes with a bonus 7″. Yellow vinyl, no less. Awesome. From what I remember mellow country leaning music with a soothing voice. Looking forward to popping this one on to see if it mellows the vein popping out on my forehead.

3) Mikal Cronin “Trouble In Mind” – killer new disc featuring contributions from John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees) and Ty Segall. Strait up cool rock ‘n’ roll. This is the kind of rock I love to see in concert… and speaking of concerts…

4) Pageants EP – This wasn’t actually sent to me, it was handed to me when I saw the band play at the Bootleg Theatre this week. I’ve enjoyed their demos, but I was really impressed with the live show. A band to watch out for over the next year.

Honorable mentions include the new CD from Grace Jones, Collections Of Colonies Of Bees (great name) & Count Fleet. Digital promo of the week has to go to Bjork. Those Omar Souleyman remixes are ace!

Okay, gotta go download new software updates/drivers and trouble shoot my digital dilemma. Wish me luck.

Best,

Chuck P
