Huell Howser is a Guest DJ on KCRW!

A few weeks ago – after months of trying — I finally got Huell Howser down to the station to tape a Guest DJ Project set. Every single person in the basement had their photo taken with him. I mean, he’s a legend!

As the host of “California’s Gold”, he explores the natural wonders and people of our fine state and does it with such enthusiasm that he makes EVERYTHING interesting.

He brought that enthusiasm and passionate approach to his Guest DJ set, which was dedicated to FIVE country women he loves – Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee and June Carter Cash.

He talks about his time working for WSM television in Nashville, home to the “mother church of country music”, the Grand Ole Opry, as well as sipping out of a flask in the White House with Loretta’s husband, flying to Florida for one of Tammy’s (many) weddings and more.

In this special excerpt for the blog, host Eric J Lawrence talks to Huell about the importance of music — particularly country.

Of all the guests I’ve had on the show over the last 2+ years, no one has gotten folks more excited than Huell Howser. People have been bugging me for weeks about when it’s going to run and it’s finally here. Enjoy!
