Guest DJ Set from The “Goddess of Raw Foods” Ani Phyo

Chef and cookbook author Ani Phyo is an all around raw food maven.  She has been called the “goddess of raw foods” by Andrew Zimmern, the host of Travel Channel’s “Bizarre Foods” and just released a new cookbook but her recent visit to KCRW was ALL about music.
I love that we keep uncovering how much electronic music/ the rave scene has had a huge impact our guests. Dita Von Teese picked a dance track last week and Ani also talked about how working in an underground club in London changed …

What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.
I wish my mood was as temperate at the weather (I’m always moody around my birthday). It’s been blissful this past week. Gorgeous sunny days (for the most part) and crisp cool evenings. Wishing for awesome birthdays to a couple other folks at The K who have them this week (looking at you Rachel & Raul!).
Now, on to the …

KCRW Exclusive: Stream Photek – Aviator

Ibiza is a famous hot spot for dance music. Especially this time of year, when the International Music Summit, co-founded by Pete Tong, comes to town. Our very own Music Director Jason Bentley not only got a chance to spin at the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site in Dalt Vila but also reported back, via tweet, on what new music was catching the ears of the attendees clubbing into the early morning hours…
“Record of the set in Ibiza is (drumroll…) Photek “Aviator”)

Listen: A Tribute to Gil Scott Heron from DJ Mathieu Schreyer

KCRW DJ Mathieu Schreyer hosts a weekly show Friday nights/Saturday morning from midnight to 3am. This week’s show was devoted entirely to Gil Scott Heron, the poet and songwriter many have called the forefather of rap and much, much more.
Read more about Mathieu’s reaction to his passing and hear the show in full here.
From Mathieu:
On Friday the 27th of May 2011, Gil Scott Heron left us.
The news left me stunned.
I have been a fan of his since first hearing “The Revolution Will Not be Televised” in 1991. I …

Photos: Jam Day at UCLA Jazz & Reggae Festival

KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez is not only an expert on the decks but a pretty great photographer too. I asked him to capture the KCRW stage for Jam Day at the UCLA Jazz & Reggae Festival this past Sunday in between his time spinning and hosting the stage (along with fellow KCRW DJs Jeremy Sole and Mario Cotto. (I should also mention that Anthony had his first stint hosting Morning Becomes Eclectic this more and you can find that in the archives here shortly)

From Anthony: Nobody knows much about this …

A Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron

By KCRW DJ Eric J Lawrence:
To hardcore music fans, the name Gil Scott-Heron is synonymous with poetic soul.
Even those who only know of him from his cutting track, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” would recognize him as one of the more fiery vocalists ever to record in the pop idiom.  But all should agree that he was a man beset by personal demons that nevertheless created among the most powerful, provocative and socially-conscious music of the past 40 years.  Sadly, …

Download Brett Dennen’s Live Session on KCRW

(Brett Dennen’s recent Morning Becomes Eclectic performance is available for download until June 2, get it while you can!)

From KCRW volunteer Taryn Olsen:

I was introduced to Brett Dennen when I went to see Mason Jennings a few years back at Santa Monica High School. There were strict fire code regulations in the auditorium and the security guards stood in the aisles asking people to stay seated.
Everybody complied nicely until Brett Dennen took the stage.
He played, “When You Feel It You Know” from his album “So Much …

Photos: Little Dragon KCRW Live Session

Last night, Swedish quartet Little Dragon gave us a preview of songs from their forthcoming album “Ritual Union” and not only cemented their place in the hearts of KCRW music fans, but virtually guaranteed that their name will be known far beyond our airwaves by years end.
They started out slowly, with the dramatic “Twice,” and you could almost hear a pin drop in the room of less than 200 people, Bob Clearmountain’s living room-style Berkeley Street studio. They had us hanging on the edge of every note.
The energy in the …
