As I type this, I’m watching Rick Bayless’ PBS show Mexico – One Plate at a Time. While Rick just opened a restaurant in LA (Red-O), is a cookbook author, and winner of Top Chef Masters, its his TV show that made DJ Raul Campos a fan.
When I sent a note to all the KCRW Djs letting them know I would be having Rick on the Guest DJ Project, Raul quickly replied asking to host it. It ends up he loves the show and watches it with his mom. Hearing Raul tell Rick about bonding with his mom over the show was really special, even if it didn’t make it into the final cut.
What did make it in was a bunch of songs Rick loves from around the world – including Cuba and France. He puts together a playlist like he would a menu and takes us through the evening, while connecting the dots on the relationships between the two.
