Jamie Lidell Live on KCRW

Written by

One of Jason’s first questions to Jamie Lidell was one I’ve always had myself – where did all that soul come from?? The UK artist called Prince his “gateway drug” and cited George Clinton and Luther Vandross and influences as well.

Lidell burst onto our airwaves with the uber catchy track “Mutiply” in 2006, but this is the first time he’s visited the station for a live performance so there’s been a lot of anticipation!  He did a career-spanning set, including an explosive version of his latest single “I Wanna be Your Telephone.”

This is the first time I’ve seen Lidell with a full live band – he often performs solo with the help of loop pedals and still puts on one of the best live shows around. While Lidell swayed and grooved, emoting through every fiber of his being, his crack backing band danced along, particularly keyboardist Mr Jimmy, who reminded me of Dr Johnny Fever from WKRP in Cincinnati (it’s the ‘stache)

Lidell’s sold out show at the Troubadour this past April got rave reviews and he plays a substantially bigger venue — the Echoplex — tomorrow night (Thursday) in LA. Don’t miss this KCRW Presents show.
