Morning Becomes Eclectic »

The Avett Brothers have been getting airplay on KCRW since the Fall ’09 release of the Rick Rubin produced I and Love and You, and this latest release has certainly helped to find the boys a new audience. Meanwhile, we’ve had a ton of amazing bands pass through KCRW lately and I’m not sure if my fellow co-workers knew what to expect. Seeing the Avett Brothers perform live is certainly something to behold. If you have the chance, don’t miss it. (They will be at Nokia here in LA tomorrow …

KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad sat down with Yoko Ono to talk about her new recordings and the various collaborators on her new Plastic Ono Band stage show, which comes to the Orpheum Theater (and is Presented by KCRW) on Friday and Saturday. The interview airs at 9pm and will be available in the archives here after it airs.
Ono tells Garth that she and Lady Gaga speak the same language and she’s been intrigued by the wide variety of artists that want to work with her. Other performers on the bill …

Uncategorized, What I Got at the Post Office »

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.
“Fall is the new summer! After a couple of weeks of chilly weather, we’ve had temps reaching the hundred and teens in downtown LA. It’s driving me crazy, but I think we’re past the madness.
At least the post office had some nifty goods.  Check ‘em out.

I’m the sort of music fan that finds myself drawn to music in all forms – books about music, movies about music and particularly music documentaries (I’ve been on a kick lately, watching Led Zep’s “Song Remains the Same and Pink Floyd’s “Live at Pompeii”)
When I saw the movie “DiG!” in 2004, I knew I was watching something special. My first thought was ‘how could someone have followed two bands (Dandy Warhols & Brian Jonestown Massacre) for so long – something like  7 years’ – to create one film.’ I …

KCRW Presents, Morning Becomes Eclectic »

One of Jason’s first questions to Jamie Lidell was one I’ve always had myself – where did all that soul come from?? The UK artist called Prince his “gateway drug” and cited George Clinton and Luther Vandross and influences as well.
Lidell burst onto our airwaves with the uber catchy track “Mutiply” in 2006, but this is the first time he’s visited the station for a live performance so there’s been a lot of anticipation!  He did a career-spanning set, including an explosive version of his latest single “I Wanna …

The music fans at KCRW are not limited to the music department. Today’s post comes from Beth Topping, who helps run our Fringe Benefits program and our semi-annual pledge drives. She also happens to have a deep love for ‘70’s rock:

This Thursday, September 30th, John Cale and special guests will take command of UCLA’s Royce Hall for “When Past & Future Collide – Paris 1919 Live.”
Let me tell you why you should not miss this legendary performance.
First, you will be sharing oxygen with a man who was a founding member …

David Bowie, mp3 Stream »

To celebrate the release of David Bowie’s re-mastered Station to Station, four of our DJs, Jeremy Sole, Anthony Valadez, Eric J Lawrence, and Chris Douridas, have each remixed the album’s lead single, “Golden Years”. Station to Station was recorded in Los Angeles, so it was fitting for some of KCRW’s leading tastemakers to take on the task, with each remix heard by Bowie himself. Each DJ took a unique path in recreating, deconstructing or re-imagining the classic song.
Here’s a little snippet from each DJ’s experience as well as the audio!

Artists You Should Know, Uncategorized »

From KCRW DJ Eric J Lawrence:
Last week, my pals Kevin & Zach of Park the Van Records invited me out to see one of their latest signings, Brass Bed.  For a small label, Park the Van has a killer roster, which includes Dr. Dog, Generationals, and Pepi Ginsberg, so I knew I was in for a treat.
But oh, what a treat!
This Lafayette, Louisiana-based power pop quartet have that perfect balance of snappy cutting-edge rock & roll tunes with retro touches and echoes.  Their sonic mix recalls the dynamic, ever-evolving pop …
