With more than 1.5 million records sold, Latin Grammys for both Best Album & Song, and 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Zoé celebrate their 20th anniversary this year with the release of their 6th studio album entitled, Aztlán.
The album is slated for release on April 20th, but the band has rolled out a couple singles to create some buzz. “Clarividad” will be released on Friday, April 6th, but you can hear it today, right here, on Pan Caliente!
“Clarividad” is a brooding track that keeps in line with Zoé’s now classic sound. León Larregui’s proprietary delivery of lyrics, coupled with finely tuned synths and accented guitar riffs, hint that this may be yet another platinum-bound album for the Mexican quintet.
We are definitely excited about this release and incredibly intrigued by what the significance of the album’s title might be for the band. Aztlán is a clear reference to the legendary ancestral home of the Mexica (who would later come to rule the Aztec Empire in what is now modern day Mexico). But, Zoé have not necessarily been Mexico-centric or cultural historians in their career or sound. Luckily lead singer León Larregui has shed a bit of light for us on why they chose this title:
“El título del disco, Aztlán, hace referencia a nuestro pueblo, es una invitación a descubrir la belleza y riqueza de nuestra cultura, a mirar hacia adentro y recobrar esa dignidad y orgullo mexicano. Esta reflexión es con miras a reinventarnos en un futuro cercano, manteniendo nuestra mexicanidad en el mundo globalizado. Esto no necesariamente tuvo injerencia directa en los sonidos de las canciones, es más conceptual.”
Translation: “The title of the album, Aztlán, is a reference to our people. It is an invitation to discover the beauty and richness of our culture, and look inward so we can recover that Mexican dignity and pride. This reflection to the past is with the hopes that as we reinvent ourselves in the near future, we can maintain our ‘Mexicanness’ in a globalized world. This concept did not necessarily have direct impact on the sounds of the songs, it was more conceptual.”
