KCRW Exclusive: David Lynch On Morning Becomes Eclectic

Written by

An owl flew over the house where we were interviewing David Lynch. Now, if you’re at all familiar with Twin Peaks you know this is a big deal, as “the owls are not what they seem.” If you aren’t, just know, it was a moment where things couldn’t possibly seem more serendipitous.

Lynch is an outspoken fan/listener of KCRW. And for years, Jason Bentley has been playing Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks theme in his set from time to time and, without fail, we’ll get multiple phone calls/tweets about it.

The show had an immeasurable impact on television and Lynch’s style has influenced so much of what has happened since. The idea of him bringing back the series after a quarter-century hiatus was exciting, and the chance to talk to him about it — and the INCREDIBLE soundtrack — was an amazing opportunity.

Instead of spilling the beans at the beginning, you had to tune each week to find out the featured artists –ranging from Nine Inch Nails to the Cactus Blossoms.

Lynch talked about a few select artists and why he chose them, as well as the importance of protecting your vision as an artist and how meditation could get us closer to world peace. It’s a far ranging interview that is well worth a listen. Find it here (or stream below)
