Rare Tracks and True Stories of Bob Marley

Written by

Bob Marley. Adored by millions, he spread a gospel of peace and love, introducing the world not only to reggae music, but also a window into life in a third world country.

With his incredible stardom and the ubiquitous nature of his music, it’s easy to think you know Bob Marley. But, even though his story has been told many times, there are rumors and falsehoods that have been widely spread.

Reggae expert/historian Roger Steffens takes on the challenge of telling the true story in his critically-acclaimed book “So Much Things to Say“, which is an oral history of the artist told by all kinds of people — many of whom had not spoken on the record before.

I became obsessed with “Exodus” in high school and, more than 20 years later, a few songs on the album have taken on completely new meaning for me thanks to Roger. His stories are FASCINATING.

You can also hear rare tracks, demo recordings and alternate versions of well known songs and so much more in our hour-long special, hosted by Rhythm Planet host Tom Schnabel.

As KCRW’s Music Director, Tom hired Roger to host The Reggae Beat back in the day. Roger ended up going on tour with Bob Marley shortly after the show launched, so it’s really come full circle having him back in our studio.

Enjoy!
