Track Premiere: Kinky – “Lowrider” (War Cover)

There are fewer things in music that get me more pumped than a killer cover. To take a great song and then elevate it by switching up the genre, instrumentation, translating it to a different language, or just making it relevant again, is pure magic.

So when Amazon Music announced they would be releasing “a collection of over 30 road trip-ready cover songs, August 4th,” I got very excited.

The project is called Open Road and today we bring you the Premiere of War’s ultra drive-time classic, Lowrider, as reinvented by the Regiomontano quintet, Kinky.

On this particular track, Kinky convert the iconic car culture and backyard bbq anthem, into a dark, and loungy head bobber. This is almost one of those classics you shouldn’t touch, but with the fat low-end and a verse in Spanish, Kinky make it their own.

They said, “Low Rider is a song that has a unique sound that you can move to, and at the same time has that cultural and musical weight, it’s very interesting for us. We couldn’t resist the challenge of experimenting with all of it.”

Kinky are no strangers to the world of covers, having revitalized Wall of Voodoo’s Mexican Radio in 2008, and interpreting 3 Banda classics on their 2014 MTV Unplugged album.

This cover was a gamble but I say it’s a win. Orale.
