Is it truly possible that September is only a week away?! Seriously where does the time go? I certainly can’t answer that definitively, but I can help guide you through the next few minutes of your life by sharing some killer tunes that will get your weekend started right.
The National – “Carin at the Liquor Store”
It’s been gloriously cloudy, and relatively cool for August in L.A. lately. I know that’s supposed to change soon, but I’m in deep denial. This gloomy, gorgeous piano ballad is working wonders to help keep me in that overcast headspace.
King Krule – “Czech One”
We haven’t had any new music from King Krule since the debut album 6 Feet Beneath the Moon in 2013. Mastermind Archy Marshall has given us tunes under different guises, but it is incredibly satisfying to see him return to the project that put him on our radar. The song is giving you a lot despite its deceptively minimalist structure. Abstract lyrics, jazz notes interjected into not necessarily obvious places, and an overall sense of aching and longing… and the video is a surrealist
Beck – “Dear Life”
How did I miss the fact that Beck announced a release date (October 13th) for his long awaited new album Colors earlier this month?! It doesn’t really matter, I suppose, I know now and am properly excited. It would be impossible not to be excited after hearing this new single. It’s the kind of track that invites you to float along with it, and it gives me extremely high hopes for the album as a whole.
Mister Heavenly – “Hammer Drop”
Finally, I’ll send you off to your various weekend adventures with this absolute banger from the indie supergroup comprised of Ryan Kattner (Man Man), Nick Thorburn (Islands, The Unicorns), and Joe Plummer (Cold War Kids, Modest Mouse, the Shins). Go forth, and slay.
