This week Today’s Top Tune traverses the globe with stops in Gothenberg for Little Dragon, and Cuba for pianist Rubén González. We travel to Hong Kong to discover the work of Blood Wine or Honey, and to Brazil where we find the Nomad Orchestra. Then we return to the US for work from Hundred Waters who hails from Florida.

Monday, June 26

Rubén González: Melodia del Río from Introducing… Rubén González
Even before his work with the Buena Vista Social Club, Rubén González helped define the Cuban sound we hear today. A late bloomer, his first solo album, Introducing… Rubén González, was recorded when he was 77, and included several of his bandmates (from Buena Vista Social Club). A reissue to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary features extended and unreleased tracks as well as a timeless classic composed by González, the beautiful “Melodía del Río” (River Melody).

Blood Wine or Honey: Anxious Party People
Blood Wine or Honey has been honing its Electro-Psychedelic skills in the industrial warehouses of Hong Kong. Be prepared for a kaleidoscopic sound as we turn to “Anxious Party People.”

Little Dragon: Strobe Light from Season High
We are always ready for new work from Gothenburg’s Little Dragon. Its four strong-minded musicians have grown through the years but continue to rely on their deep friendships to create work they can be proud of. Have no fear, Little Dragon. We love you and “Strobe Light.”

Hundred Waters: Particle from Currency
As Hundred Waters readies a full length album, it teases us with a new EP. Songwriter and vocalist Nicole Miglis notes that the idea behind Currency “revolves around the balance between self and another. Of the fine line between giving too much and not enough.” We think “Particle” captures just the right balance.

Nomade Orquestra: Estrada Para Camomila from Entremundos
From the heart of the São Paulo’s jazz scene, the 10 piece Nomade Orquestra creates a cosmic musical playground where Ethio-jazz, Indian classical and soul swirls around its Brazilian roots. “Estrada Para Camomila” is a gorgeous journey through an aural landscape.
