This week, Today’s Top Tune gives a shout out to Afghan Whigs birthday-boy Greg Dulli. We feature a track by Korey Dane that Jason Bentley is enjoying, and introduce you to a new band called Cones. Plus, we preview a new album that RAC has on the horizon, and get high with Alice Coltrane.

Korey Dane:  Half Asleep from Chamber Girls

Born and bred in Long Beach, Korey Dane had 96 hours of studio time to complete his sophomore album. Dane tapped some of his friends to back him and proceeded to commit his songs to analog tape, with the promise to record as if it were live. “Half Asleep” feels like a celebration.

Cones: Echoes On

We share the first single from LA band Cones, made up by brothers Jonathan and Michael Rosen who play in Eleanor Friedberger’s band. Apart from making music, Jonathan was the animator for Toro y Moi’s concert film from last year. “Echoes On” has the easy breezy SoCal feel we love so much.

RAC: This Song (feat. Rostam) single

Grammy Award-winner RAC, aka Andre Allen Anjos, has a highly anticipated new album coming this summer. The first single is a gorgeous collaboration with Rostam, formerly of Vampire Weekend. “This Song” is pretty special to Andre as it marks the tenth anniversary of his making music in his dorm room as RAC.

The Afghan Whigs: Demon in Profile from In Spades

Happy Birthday to the Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli, whose latest album captures the band’s explosive dynamic. Just a couple of months after their last tour ended, they reconvened in New Orleans and got to work on their brand of dark metaphors and haunting imagery. “Demon in Profile” is a track we’re enjoying.

Alice Coltrane: Om Rama from The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and the wife of John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda stood in her husband’s shadow. Few know that in the last two decades of her life, she composed Hindu devotional songs as the spiritual leader of an ashram in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills. She poured herself into her music, mixing jazz and blues elements with Indian instruments. A compilation was created from four recordings she made on cassette in the 80s and 90s. One of them includes our offering of “Om Rama.”
