I first came across El Niño & the Southern Oscillations on Today’s Top Tune back in April of this year. Their song, “Number Stations,” immediately caressed my soft spot for minimalist electronica with a break beat.
There isn’t a whole lot known about this project other than it’s Brooklyn musician Sam Posner’s tribute to atmospheric indices and how they measure complex series of climactic changes on the ocean.
I’ve spent this last month listening to the self titled EP, and I feel like I understand how he is trying to communicate a “meditation on the Beauty and Power of the Ocean”; through the balance of 80’s influenced synths, electronica subtleties, and worldly sounding melodies (sans lyrics).
Each song compliments the last, creating a cohesive sound that culminates with the closing number, “Austerlitz“.
Today we bring you the premiere of the music video for the aforementioned song.
The video, much like the music, builds to a climax of sights and sounds. Albeit a minimalist music video, you can appreciate the majesty of the ocean’s images as they are synced nearly perfectly to the beat.
It’s a fun, relaxing track and video that will look pretty boss on gigantic LEDs in the future (*ahem* music festivals).
