BadBadNotGood live on Morning Becomes Eclectic

Combining their formal jazz training with their love of hip hop, BadBadNotGood have carved out a niche all their own. We were thrilled to have them in studio for a live session including songs from their latest release “IV” (on local label Innovative Leisure). Fellow Toronto native Charlotte Day Wilson was thrilled to flee the gloomy weather and joined them in the studio for “In Your Eyes” and then they closed the session with a steamy version of her original track “Work”. I was wiping the sweat off my brow. Well worth watching to the very end!

Spending a morning with these guys, a few things become abundantly clear: they are very talented players, they’re a bit on the shy side and they are laidback, bordering on goofy. During soundcheck, they played everything from Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years” to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” and they were having so much fun jamming, it was hard to shut them down as we got closer to air time.

They count Odd Future’s Tyler the Creator, Danny Brown, and Ghostface Killah, among among their fans/friends, but one of their most well known collaborators is mysterious super producer Kaytranada.

Kaytranada remixed their song “Kaleidoscope” from III and they returned the favor by appearing on his release “99.9%”. They finally got in a studio together in Toronto and the guy say there was a “mutual fire”. They talked about his “personal swagger” that sets him apart as a producer, adding “his bounce is unlike every other bounce.”

They teased that they recorded way more material than has been released, saying there’s “tons more heat on those hard drives.”  Jason Bentley pressed them for details, but they played coy. Hopefully we’ll all get a taste soon.

In the meantime, enjoy this live session as BBNG take jazz to new places and see them live at the Regent Theater on Sun, Feb 26.
