We greet the new year with a fistful of Today’s Top Tunes showcasing work from forthcoming albums. We anticipate great things from White Lies when the band travels to LA for a show in February. Bonobo delivers a quiet yet lush song with vocals by Rhye. Cate Le Bon prepares a quirky new EP. Captain Planet & Chico Mann unite in their Afro Latin love. And Brit pop rockers Elbow have a joyous new album on the horizon.

Global music innovators Captain Planet & Chico Mann have forged their mutual love of Afro Cuban rhythms with a collection of songs they’ll release in February. Today’s Top Tune takes flight with a sweet treat called “Oye Bien.”

White Lies came up with a light hearted love song dedicated to our town and keeping friendships alive across the tyranny of time zones. The album Friends was recorded in the private London studio of Roxy Music founder Bryan Ferry and contains “Morning in LA.”

Migration is an apropos title for the new album by Simon Green, aka Bonobo. While in flight he sketched the chord sequence to the song “Break Apart,” then had Michael Milosh of Rnye record the verses in Berlin and added horns in London.

Elbow: Magnificent (She Says) from Little Fictions
Since its debut album 15 years ago, Elbow has let its songs take their natural course. With music that never feels rushed or bogged down with overblown choruses, the lyrical
tales wash over us carried on mellifluous melodies. If “Magnificent (She Says)” is any indication, we have a joyous and upbeat new album to look forward to next month.
