Music for your weekend

Written by

This week has produced a few releases from some KCRW favorites. Tee ’em up this weekend and enjoy!

Gabriel Garzón-Montano – Jardin

This talented multi-instrumentalist has quickly become a KCRW staple since he released Sour Mango last Nov. If you enjoy soul music with a dash of pop sensibility then you should definitely check out GGM’s debut album Jardin, which is out today on Stones Throw Records. Below is a video for his latest single Crawl. Tune in to Morning Becomes Eclectic on Feb 1st as Gabriel joins Jason Bentley for a live interview and performance.

Sylvan Esso – Kick Jump Twist

We all fell in love with Amelia Meath’s traditional folk style of singing laced over Nick Sanborn’s head nodding beats, when Sylvan Esso burst onto the scene a couple of years ago. With the release of Kick Jump Twist the duo continues to push the boundaries of their unique combination. A couple of days ago they released the video for their latest single and it proves to be as progressive as their sound.

Thundercat – Show You the Way feat. Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins

Many of us were who were at Brainfeeder night at the Hollywood Bowl last summer, were beyond pleasantly surprised to see Michael McDonald perform a couple of songs with Thundercat. I think we also knew that there was more to come from this seemingly random pairing. Well this week, Thundercat proved us right with the release of Show You the Way, the first single from a forthcoming full length due out on Feb 24th. Only Thundercat could combine a Doobie Brother with Footloose to natural effect. Enjoy!

Bonus video from editor T-Hale: Chaz Bundick Meets the Mattson 2 – Star Stuff

Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi, aka Les Sins) hooked up with SoCal vibey jazz twins, The Mattson 2, for a new project, that we’re quite fond of. Chaz utilizes the musically proficient Mattson bros to great effect, drawing out his psych landscapes with the two leading the way sonically. Check the dreamy vid below and take note that the album drops March 31st.
