Week Ahead Today’s Top Tune 10.17 – 10.21.16

We head into a week’s worth of Today’s Top Tune with artists like Mr Little Jeans, who performs in Southern Cali later this fall, and Nuyorican percussionist Willie Bobo, who you’ve probably heard sampled on work by the Beastie Boys. Wye Oak’s Jenn Wesner takes flight under the solo moniker Flock of Dimes. There’s STRFKR, a band whose name we can barely say on the radio. Plus, new work from LA based artists Cherry Glazerr!

Monday, Oct 17, Cherry Glazerr “Told You I’d Be with the Guys” single

Named after KCRW’s Morning Edition anchor, Chery Glaser, but unlike its namesake, Cherry Glazerr is an unapologetically loud music machine! The band’s new single spotlights women’s solidarity — both hopeful and dismal. Hear for yourself on “Told You I’d Be with the Guys.”

Tuesday, Oct 18, Willie Bobo “Broasted or Fried” from Dig My Feeling

Legendary Latin Jazz Nuyorican percussionist Willie Bobo lent his talents to the likes of greats including Miles Davis, Cal Tjader and Tito Puente to name a few. His work has been sampled and covered by Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow and Santana. Recently, his wife and son, Eric Bobo of Cypress Hill, have unearthed and helped compile a recording of rarities and iconic tracks. Here’s a track to groove by called “Broasted or Fried.”

Wednesday, Oct 19, Mr Little Jeans “Stitches” from Fevers EP

Norwegian singer Monica Birkenes is best known as Mr Little Jeans and for her arresting cover of Arcade Fire’s “Rescue Song.” Now based in LA, her new EP is due out later this week, full of songs that are hypnotic and sexy. Listen to “Stitches.”

Thursday, Oct 20, Flock of Dimes “Everything Is Happening Today” from If You See Me, Say Yes

Jenn Wesner is the talented songwriter and vocalist of the popular duo Wye Oak. She has just released her solo debut full-length which she wrote, performed and self-produced. The enormity of a major move from her native Baltimore to Durham, North Carolina, is palpable and telling as she navigates her new life on “Everything Is Happening Today.”

Friday, Oct 21, STRFKR “Tape Machine” from Being No One, Going Nowhere

Get ready for “Tape Machine,” a funky electro-pop ride from STRFKR’s fourth album. Founder Joshua Hodges went alone to the desert with the goal alluded to in the album’s title, Being No One, Going Nowhere, and came up with an album’s worth of rich dark dance songs.
