Andy Cabic has been playing under the name Vetiver for over a decade and the Bay Area-based musician released an excellent album called “Complete Strangers” earlier this year. He shares an artist he loves as part of our Fandom series!
“I am a fan of Arve Henriksen, the Norwegian trumpet player and composer.
His last album “The Nature Of Connections” is one I listen to a lot, particularly in the mornings when the fog is floating in my neighborhood and I’m still slightly sleepy.
Great tones, with wonderful arrangements and performances, the album is an understated mix of styles…jazz, classical, folk. I’m always hearing new things in it.
On the track “Hambopolskavalsen“:
“First of all, I love the sound of a Hardanger fiddle. It has such an expressive and tactile sound.
This song in many ways encapsulates the range of style and emotion present across the entire album.
Percussive ambience builds and takes on a melody, pulling other players into the exchange. The flute-like
timbre of Henriksen’s trumpet is a wonderful contrast to the strings and the tempo and structure of the
song strike a perfect balance between improvised moments and composed song-like form.
