Best known as the female lead on Gotye’s Grammy-winning anthem for broken hearts “Somebody That I Used To Know,” Kimbra refused to let one hit define her by following up with the dynamic album “Vows”.

Showing a keen appreciation of KCRW as a tastemaker community (her early KCRW studio performance with Gotye has been viewed more than 17 million times on YouTube), Kimbra played our SXSW showcase in 2013 in support of “Vows”, where we struck up a friendship.

Now as she prepares to release her highly anticipated sophomore album, I’ve had the pleasure of remixing her lead single “90s Music“.

Listening to the original audio tracks, there was plenty to work with – all kinds of great vocal bits and interesting percussion.

I mostly wanted to reframe the track as a dance groove by bumping it uptempo and adding some electronic elements.

All of the writing and arrangement was done at my place in Venice with my friend and Protools Jedi Dan Chase.

We mixed it at Ocean Way Studio A in Hollywood on their legendary FocusRite console.

I hope you like it!

Editor’s Note: The New Zealand native’s upcoming sophomore album, “The Golden Echo“, will be released by Warner Bros. Records in August.
