KCRW Premiere: Pompeya Get the Cosmic Forest Treatment From Psychemagik

Written by

Like a signal beamed through the gauzy din of space, the post-everything/New Wave/Disco/Synth phenomenon that gave birth to DFA, Modular, Kitsune has traveled all the way around the world and come back to us.

Russian dudes Pompeya play shimmery synth-driven popfunk that recalls early Holy Ghost! and Friendly Fires singles. As champions of this still burgeoning sound in Russia, Pompeya are energetically introducing Moscow’s youth to electronic indie culture.

Their US debut “Tropical” came out last Fall and is being followed up with a new EP this year. In the interim, Pompeya are releasing a remix LP for “Tropical“, which features remixes from clubworld stalwarts Fred Falke, Jimmy Edgar and Psychemagik.

As per usual, Psychemagik have taken album track “Slaver” into the depths of the Cosmic Forest and recast it in their own image.

Swirling in floating green smoke and speckled with tiny glowing stars, the track is leftfield electro-funk that is as broody as it is bouncy. Another spectacularly strange trip.

Editor’s Note: KCRW will present Psychemagik and DJ Spun at theLIFT on Saturday, January 11, 2014. More info.
