The Poets Of Rhythm – Smilin’ (While You’re Crying)

The Brooklyn-based label has been putting out incredible soul and funk music for years and one of their latest release is “The Poets of Rhythm Anthology: 1992-2003″. The label calls the group “the undeniably funky frontrunners of the modern soul movement”.
I’m picking this up for my personal collection as soon as I can get my hands on it and here is a sample!
The Moth & the Flame – Sorry
At this year’s SXSW music conference, one of my favorite discoveries was a band called The Moth & the Flame.
I popped into a random bar for a late afternoon beer and ended up totally transfixed by their music.
At the time, the band had plans to come to LA and record their album with Joey Waronker (Beck/Atoms for Peace).
Now they are calling themselves locals and and have an EP set for release at the end of this month. Check out the first single and see them at The Bootleg on October 25. (It’s a free download while it lasts)
Best Coast — This Lonely Morning
No other band captures the sunny California vibe quite like Best Coast.
DJ Eric J Lawrence says the new EP – which at 7 songs is practically a full record – “splits the difference between the two poles of their established sound: fuzzy garage rock & 60s-flavored girl-pop.”
It’s streaming in full as part of KCRW’s Album Preview series.
Wild Ones – “Golden Twin”
If you’re in the mood for some sweet synth pop with delicate female vocals, give Wild Ones a listen.
I discovered the Portland band amongst a stack of CDs I had been sent and I find myself going back to it quite a bit.
“Keep it Safe” is their debut and was recorded in a two-story East Portland warehouse rehearsal space. It has this air of romance that reminds me of Stars. It’s not terribly wild, but it is very good!
