Philip Owusu: Artist You Should Know

Six years after the release of their soulful underground hit “Living With…Owusu & Hannibal,” Robin Hannibal has feverishly produced a number of releases; Boom Clap Bachelors, Quadron, & Rhye. In the meantime, in addition to contributing vocals to a number of tracks and remixes the past few years, Philip Owusu has seemingly been quietly, secretly working on his own solo material in Copenhagen.

Towards the end of last year, Gilles Peterson debuted a taste of his solo work which has now made its way stateside and has been getting spins on KCRW for the last few weeks. “Goodnight” is truly elegant and the kind of exquisite neo-soul that feels timeless because even as it harkens back to Bobbi Humprhey-esque jazz vibes and late 70s romantic R & B, it’s still very fresh.

Here’s to hoping “Goodnight” is a lovely harbinger of the vibes to come on Owusu’s album.
