Delta Rae’s set up inside the studio – a large chain, metal trashcan, bass drum with their logo, many pairs of drumsticks – gave us a hint of what was to come, but we were still stunned by their performance.
They brought swampy, bluesy, gospel stomp and excellent four-part harmonies to our airwaves. The North Carolina-based sextet is made up of three blond-haired siblings, a childhood friend, and two newer members on bass and drums.
I actually remember the very first time Jason played their big song “Bottom of the River” because it sounds like nothing else right now and instantly grabbed my attention. The band says it came to singer Eric Holljes in a dream.
Another highlight was “Dance in the Graveyards” and they also treated us to a brand new song, a bit of blue-eyed soul on “Whatchu Thinkin’ ‘Bout Baby?”.
Check out the set here and, if you’re in LA, come see them tomorrow in Old Pasadena for free!
