Beck at the El Rey!

Written by

From KCRW DJ Anne Litt:

Beck surprised us all by announcing a show at the El Rey, which sold out immediately. The last time we saw him on stage in LA was during the Serge Gainsbourg tribute at the Hollywood Bowl last year and it was his first time headlining a show here in almost four years.

When he opened the show with “Golden Age” and “Lost Cause” – two highlights from “Sea Change” — I knew it was going to be a good night.

He told the audience that it was the first time the band that recorded “Sea Change” had been together to play in 10 years. Not only were they not rusty, they were having a great time.   It was a puttin-on-the-hits night – “Where It’s At, New Pollution”, “Paper Tiger”, “Devil’s Haircut” and “Loser” to end the set, pre-encore.

Their enthusiasm was contagious.  It was a master class in songwriting and a testament to the power of well wrought and performed pop music!

p.s. It’s still crazy to think that we debuted Beck‘s music here at KCRW back in the 90’s when former Music Director (and current DJ) Chris Douridas played a cassette tape he had sent to the station!

p.p.s. We just got word that his next release will be on Jack White’s Third Man Records. Check it
