What I Got at the Post Office Today with Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

Since loads of people are in Austin this week for SXSW, let’s see what’s happening weather-wise in that musical burg.

HUMIDITY. Yeah, it’s always a problem, but at least it’s in the 70s & 80s instead of the 90s or 100s. Be prepared to peel off some clothing if you don’t get late afternoon showers to break up the hot and humid days. Here at home, it’s much cooler with temps in the 60s and the possibility of rain this weekend. Let’s see what we got from the ol’ post office this week…

1) Of Montreal “Paralytic Stalks” – New full length album from these Athens natives. Always one to put on an amazing show (they perform next week at the Wiltern with Deerhoof!) what I’ve heard of the new album continues their trend of funky prog experiments that still boggle the mind but don’t completely ditch the boogie. The really personal lyrics stood out to me this time around, but the delightful music makes this a relatively easy listen. Lucky enough to be sent the vinyl version along with the CD. The artwork is mind blowing.

2) Fanfarlo “Rooms Filled With Light” – I really enjoyed their album Reservoir from a few years ago, so I expect great things from their latest. I’ve read the new album is more synthy and new wave-ish, so I’m eager to toss this one on.

3) Little Red Lung – Now this is great. Nothing more exciting than getting brand new music from LA bands. I saw them perform at Hotel Cafe a while ago with Pisces, and I really enjoy this 6 song EP. Unique doesn’t do them justice. There are so many influences at play. I’ve only listened to the EP a couple of times, and each time has yielded something new. An incredible package too, including stickers, buttons, music and a personal note. Well done.

4) The Concept “Gimme Twice EP” – When I first opened this, I thought it was a new Lana Del Rey single! Great artwork. Okay, so I’ll start this off with the obvious… sounds a LOT like the killer band, Phoenix. I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing, considering how great Phoenix are, but it’s a tough thing to be saddled with another bands sound strait off the bat on your first EP. Still, hooky as heck and I think the listener will set aside the comparisons and appreciate the EP for what it is. Four slices of electro pop heaven.

Honorable mentions this week include new music from White Hills, Leland Sundries and Santigold, with the digital promo of the week going to Secret Stash for their incredible new reissue of Blue from K. Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas. Exquisite!

Another week of adventures at the post office in the can. Have a great week!

Best,

Chuck P.
