Frankie Rose: Artist You Should Know

Written by

The probability of getting struck by lighting once is 1 in 600,000.

The probability of getting struck by lighting twice…1 in 36, 000,000,000.

So how does Frankie Rose do it?

Frankie Rose has been in not one, not two, but THREE critically acclaimed (and truly fantastic) bands…Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls.

She additionally has recorded on her own and released an album a few years back under the name Frankie Rose and the Outs.

Her excellent follow-up to that album, “INTERSTELLAR” has just been released simply under her own name.

For someone who’s made a career out of jangly lo-fi, girl group hanging out in the garage sounds, she’s boldly gone and built a rocketship in the garage like some precocious kid in an 80s movie. And the rocket soars.

On the title track, Ms. Rose crafts a sound that splits the difference between Vangelis and The Breeders and creates something beautiful and epic and emotive and true. And as the album progresses, she continues to push the boundaries  in various AOR directions that aren’t denials of her lo-fi past, but rather show a remarkable range and appreciation (and talent) for epic sounds.

It’s a great album and an exciting listen. Maybe she got tired of getting struck by lighting in the same place so many times, so if this is a move to avoid it, she’s going to be in trouble, because this thing is essentially a lightning rod.
