What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

Summer is in full swing (weather wise) and this weekend was incredible. FYF Fest was probably the best it’s ever been and if I had to boil it down, some of my fave performances were from Purity Ring, No Age and Pink Mountaintops. Coincidentally, all duos. Wild.

Broken Social Scene were as incredible as always. Explosions In The Sky killed at the end of the night. So many great performances and plenty of water and food this year, short lines… obviously, I had a good time. Hope you did too, if ya went. If not, enough blathering…

OKAY! On to the post office post of the week…

1) Vinyl love – This week a new LP from Dan Melchior und das Menace (lo-fi madness) plus 3 new 7″s from Papercranes, Dreamtapes (this was a 7″ of the week a few weeks ago) and a Lanie Lane 7″ on Jack White’s Third Man Records. Such an amazing series from Third Man. Very well done. Whoever the photographer is that’s taking all of the shots for the front covers is amazing. These are framable. I’d frame ’em if I wasn’t listening to them, that is.

2) Nikki Lane “Walk Of Shame” – from the label that brought you the excellent Fool’s Gold album, “IAMSOUND.” Insurgent country with a timeless feel (she has an incredible voice) and solid tunes. I’m really digging this one.

3) Oona “Shhhhhout!” – new EP from San Franciscans I met on twitter. Huge pop songs that belong on top 40 radio, but will fit in nicely to the eclectic stylings of KCRW. I’ve only listened to one of the songs so far, but it’s sugary sweet fun. Perfect for these sticky summer nights.

Honorable mentions this week are new CDs from Russian Circles, Nurses and digital highlight from Jens Lekman. I’ve had the track for a while, but the label finally sent over a radio edit (f bombs don’t fly on the FM radio!) so I’m going to play this sucker tonight.

Thanks as always. Tune in in tonight at 12a for my last Tuesday night show, and then listen on Sunday evenings for my new time slot from 12-3a.

Cheers,
Chuck P
