Release the Sunbird Live on KCRW – Come Back To Us

Written by

Right out of the gate, Jason Bentley had to ask Zach Rogue why he chose to do a project outside of Rogue Wave, which has been together since 2002. His answer was simple, he wanted to make something stripped down, bare bones, that focused on  singing.

Rogue Wave takes time assembling songs and he wanted to track it quickly, with as few overdubs as possible, to capture the emotion of the songs rather than specific sound.

He also wanted to make a record with a female counterpart voice, and he had Caitlin Guttenberger in studio today to provide it, as they brought our favorite songs from Release the Sunbird’s debut to life.

They also added a couple covers, “Catch the Wind” by Donovan and a truly cool version of “Road to Nowhere” by the Talking Heads.

Zach seems really cozy in his new role, relishing his creative freedom. He even called into question the future of Rogue Wave, but didn’t say anything definitive. (listen to the full interview to decide for yourself).   He also mentioned contributing to a Nick Drake project to be released by Brushfire Records, so clearly he is keeping busy.
