What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

What a week! Spent the past few days up in the wine country of Paso Robles tasting some nice Rhone varietals. The weather was incredible. Here in LA, we’ve been back and forth with the temps (hot past few days, that’s for sure), but it should be mellowing out to the low 80s by the end of the week.

A ridiculous amount of great music at the post this week, too…

1) Thank you vinyl from Boris (both new LP’s). Check out this super secure packaging for the Boris vinyl from Sargent House Records! A truck could have driven over this thing and the records would still be in one piece. Well done, folks. If I had to pair these new albums with a wine from Paso Robles, I’d say a sturdy Tannat would be applicable. Heavy on the tannins with a long and complex finish.

2) Voltaire Records’ Affairs Online 12″ compilation, which is a worldwide comp of electronic music, and a few 7″s, including the latest from LA Font, as seen here. Good call on sending the CD version, guys… some of us hate overplaying our precious vinyl. A good pairing here would be a full bodied Zinfandel. Lots of action on the palate with a clean finish.

3) Las Kellies “Kellies” – unreal new album from this Buenos Aries trio. Serious post punk influence with a genuine love for ESG and Wire and it really comes thru in the music without sounding like a tribute act. This is one of the few new albums I’ve had the chance to listen to since I’ve been back, and it’s a good one. A rich Roussanne would compliment this album well. It’s a breezy but elegant wine with intense aromatics. A substantial white wine for people like me who usually only drink red. Or, if you want to keep it closer to their home base of South America, a nice Malbec from Argentina would pair nicely.

Also in the mail were new CD’s from Shannon Hurley (pair with an oaky Chardonnay) and the new full length from Rob Bravery (to be paired with the classic Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah & Mourvedre).

Truth be told, I’m not much of a drinker (rarely do I drink a full glass), but I love tasting. So come taste some of these tracks tonight when I return to the air at 12a!

Best,

Chuck P.
