What I Got at the Post Office Today

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

Got some excellent weather for my birthday week. Low to mid 70s, for the most part. Seems like it’s always amazing this time of year. Gotta love LA. No, seriously… ya gotta. The happy face says it all.

Post office lovin’ today from…

1) The Ladybug Transistor “Clutching Stems” – Another package from Merge Records, another torn poster. Wasn’t someone supposed to remind me to open these gently? Oh yeah… I was.

16 years and 6 albums in. Troopers, yes they are.

2) Marissa Nadler – New self-titled album from this amazing songwriter. Playing in LA this Saturday at the Bootleg with Timber Timbre too, so nice timing! If goth had a folk branch, she’d be on it. Looking forward to another album of her special brand of acoustic spookiness.

3) Da Cruz “Sistema Subversiva” – Um, if you include a cover of Warm Leatherette on your album of Brazilian/Ethiopian/Afrobeat flavored music, rest assured, I’m probably gonna play it. Looking forward to this interpretation and whatever else the album has in store. Artwork didn’t lend itself to replacing a head with the happy face, but I think I found a nice spot.

Honorable mentions include The Givers (did you catch their MBE performance last week?), City & Colour, new music from Marianne Faithfull and a couple of singles from White Iris Records.

Hear this and more tonight… and be happy!
