What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

I wish my mood was as temperate at the weather (I’m always moody around my birthday). It’s been blissful this past week. Gorgeous sunny days (for the most part) and crisp cool evenings. Wishing for awesome birthdays to a couple other folks at The K who have them this week (looking at you Rachel & Raul!).

Now, on to the countdown.

1) UNKLE “Where Did The Night Fall” – Massive deluxxxe issue. 2 CDs packed to the brim with tunes. Gold foil packaging. Hard bound box. I’m afraid to open it.

2) AUM-FI package – Two titles, both featuring my favorite contemporary jazz bassist, William Parker. I’m a big fan of the NYC free jazz, so I’m
looking forward to digging in to these discs. If I knew how to play an instrument, I’d be Don Cherry… except fatter. If anyone knows where I
can hear this type of jazz in LA, hit me here.

3) Oi! A Nova Musica Brasileira! Looks like a great compilation of young artists from Brazil. Sticker on the CD says “A sonic
snapshot of the most exciting new Brazilian music from artists influenced by the likes of Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, Talking Heads, Os Mutantes, Beastie Boys, Sly & Robbie, Sonic Youth, Ween & Sterolab.”

Wowsers. Setting that bar pretty high, right? I’ll be popping this one in the computer first today.

Honorable mentions include new music from Phoenix Foundation (excellent band from New Zealand), a digital promo of an upcoming LP by Iceage (blistering!) & “take two” vinyl from Heavenly States.

A couple weeks ago I wrote about how I received their album in a soft jiffy pack, which creased all the corners of the LP. They resent in an extremely durable cardboard sleeved box!

Now I feel a little bad about whining… but hey, I guess that means some people actually read these. Thanks guys!

This and more on my birthday show tonight at 12a on 89.9 KCRW.

Best,
Chuck P.
