White Sea: Local Band We Love

From KCRW DJ Anne Litt:

white sea PressPhotoMorgan Kibby’s new project is called White Sea.  If you are a fan of one of the best records of 2009, M83’s  Saturdays = Youth then you’ve heard her voice.

Remember the track “Kim & Jessie?”  Yep, that’s Morgan Kibby – co-writer and vocalist.

She’s spent the last couple of years relentlessly touring with M83 and has now landed back at home in Los Angeles long enough to record her own music.  It’s the new EP, This Frontier.

What struck me about the music was how vast and cinematic it feels.  When I read more about it, Kibby talks about evoking the American West and Morricone’s spaghetti westerns.

Lay down a disco vibe underneath (yes, disco) and it’s a sound both familiar and fresh at the same time.  Much respect to Ms. Kibby for coming off the road, teaching herself pro-tools and essentially how to produce and doing this the old-fashioned way – by yourself, for yourself.

Stream one of my favorites, “Mountaineer”:

Editor’s Note: White Sea play TONIGHT at The Echo at 10pm as part of Foster the People’s residency. Two great bands in one night — worth a trip to the Eastside. See you there!
