Ceci Bastida on KCRW

Written by

When I look around the studio and everyone – from Jason to the engineer to the volunteers – is bobbing their head, I know something special is happening. Ceci Bastida started her Morning Becomes Eclectic set with “Controlar” the high energy dance track that we’ve been spinning. It’s the perfect example of a song that I can love and sing along to without having any idea what it’s about – since it’s entirely in Spanish, a language I don’t speak.  I have a connection to it that’s real and goes beyond words.

I felt that way about other songs too, including “Mas y Mas” and “Cuando Vuelvas A Caer.” She also threw in a cover of the Go Go’s “This Town.”

Ceci was born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico but is now based in Los Angeles. She had an incredible career before striking out on her own as a solo artist – first as part of the influential ska-punk band Tijuana NO and then playing with another KCRW favorite, Julieta Venegas. Her first ever live performance as a solo artist was on KCRW back in 2007 and since then she’s been nominated for a Latin Grammy for one of the songs off her debut full length “Veo La Marea.” Pretty exciting to watch her star rise.

Ceci plays a headlining show at The Troubadour on Wednesday, January 12. Check out her full set in the archives as a preview!
