Latin Alternative Artist Spotlight: Ana Tijoux and Ceci Bastida

The Latin Alternative Music Conference kicked off their Central Park Summer Stage free shows with a performance from Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux (as well as El Guincho and Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich+Fussible) on Wednesday.

We can celebrate the fact that we don’t have the East Coast heatwave and instead relax comfortably enjoying some tunes on our own time, including the title track to Ana Tijoux’s new CD.

Ana’s solo debut “1977” is named for the year of her birth and, on this track, she shows off some serious mic skills with a backdrop of laid back percussion and beats, with horns blasting in at the chorus. The rapper, who was born in Chile but spent much of her life in Paris where her parents were living in exile, made her LA performance debut in March.

Another KCRW Latin Alternative favorite, Tijuana-born Ceci Bastida, is not at the conference this year but sent us a track off her new album, which was recently released in Mexico. Like Ana, she’s no novice. She was one of the first women to rise in the ranks of Latin rock after joining ska-punk band Tijuana NO at age 15. Ceci started playing with Julieta Venegas in 2000 and opened for her earlier this year to show off her solo work. Speaking of, here is a dance track called “Controlar” produced by XXXChange.
