Zach Witherspoon is KCRW’s May Intern of the Month

Written by

Zach is a delight to have around.  His ability to completely and competently complete a task makes him an ideal intern, while his goofball attitude and ability to make us all laugh makes him an ideal coworker.

Where did you grow up and are you an only child?

I grew up in Baltimore. I have a 14 and 22 year old sister and a 3 year old brother.  I’m the oldest.

What is your current occupation?

I’m currently a student at SMC.

What is your fantasy occupation?

I would love to be a Saturday Night Live cast member/writer.

When did you first discover KCRW?

Actually when I started my internship. I never listened to much radio before and I came here though Santa Monica College.  Now that I’m here I’ve become a fan.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

One of my broadcasting professors told me about internships at KCRW.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I work the front desk Tuesday and Thursday and I transcribe the Guest DJ Projects. I’ve also learned how to do production assistance on live music shows like Garth Trinidad’s and worked at KCRW concerts.

Favorite volunteer moment?

My favorite moment was introducing a caller to YouTube. I think I may have changed his life…

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

“You’re killing me smalls!”

What song have you hit repeat on lately?

Wiz Khalifa- Work Hard Play Hard

Favorite book, movie?

I’m really into The Walking Dead comics lately, since I’m a huge zombie fan. My favorite movie of all time is Back to the Future 2.

Favorite thing to do outside the station (hobbies, recreation, etc.)?

Mostly preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse, but on my off days I like to write and cook.

W hat does KCRW mean to you?

KCRW means a lot to me. Since I’ve started it feels like I’ve really been opened up to a lot of different kinds of music and met some really awesome people.

I can’t thank Zach enough for his charm and willingness to be a part of our team.  When he’s in the office with us, I’m put at ease because I know we’re in capable hands.
