KCRW Drive Director Laura Shumate is an art fanatic. Since she has such a passion, we look to her, as well as Art Talk’s Edward Goldman, to tell us what’s going on around town. Here’s her latest missive:
With the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks arriving this year, collectives throughout the country are staging a variety of dialogues to examine where we are 10 years later. In Los Angeles, there will be LA Vs War II: Art for Peace in the Hope Era, happening 9/9 – 9/11 from 12P – 12A in Downtown L.A.’s Vortex center (2341 E. Olympic Blvd; L.A., 90021).
LA Vs War II is a massive multi-media, experiential art exhibition and cultural event, bringing together some of today’s most prolific, pro-peace/anti-war political artists and grass-root activist organizations to examine the questions: After 10 years of the Global War on Terror, where do we now stand as a nation? Is the world a safer place? Where does the Peace movement go from here? LA Vs War II will be an event as well as an activation. Come to support the art and programming, leave with ideas and dialogue for your family and community. $5 suggested donation. All ages are welcome.
Creative audience-engaging activities include live art demonstrations curated by Crewest Gallery and Mobile Mural Lab; live t-shirt screen-printing from Hit + Run; painting, stenciling and performance art; the Peace Photo Project will be taking portraits of attendees (like you!) for the Peace, LA Vs. WAR video art program; as well as TEACH-INs with such grassroots activist organizations as Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), Code Pink, Youth Justice Coalition, Antiwar.com, Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) and Los Angeles Community Action Network (LACAN) in an effort to inform and energize attendees in transforming their own lives and communities.
All the while, KCRW and dublab DJs, as well as global top selectors, will spin throughout.
A large selection of fine art, limited edition prints and pro-peace posters chronicling the creative responses to current military conflicts around the world will be on view and on sale.
The heavy roster of participating artists include: Shepard Fairey, Robbie Conal, Chaz Bojorquez, Man One, Cryptik, Mear One, Free Humanity, Eddie Colla, Leba, Lydia Emily, Shark Toof, Enik One, Favianna Rodriguez, Septerhed, Geraldine Lozano, Kristy Lovich… SO MANY MORE! Check out the LA Vs War II Facebook page [https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=219439291441287] to see the entire roster, list of activities and DJ line-up as well. Don’t forget to confirm you’re going and share with your friends too.
Curator and artist John Carr created the first LA Vs War in 2008. Over 6000 people attended. The national impact and widespread achievements of LA Vs War earned Carr the Center for the Study of Political Graphics’ 2008 “Art as a Hammer” award. LA Vs War II will live on past this September 2011 Los Angeles event under the name Vs. WAR. The show will evolve and travel to other cities bringing its unique model of creative resistance and collaboration to other communities.
