KCRW’s May Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet David! He applied to be an SMC Intern in 2016 but just missed the deadline. Instead of getting discouraged, David started volunteering to every event available and made a great impression with the team. Jessica, who runs the Partner Screening series for KCRW, had this to say, “As soon as our partner screening team knows that David is one of our volunteers we look forward to seeing him! Beyond being extremely helpful and providing a calm disposition in any situation David is hilarious.” David is a natural and we always look forward to doing an event with him. He’s kind, easy going, and one of the most helpful people out there. Get to know him through his own words!

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?

I grew up in Belize. I have a younger sister, she’ll be visiting this summer!

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

A telescope, an Astronomy textbook (for the telescope), knife, the ‘U’ encyclopedia, a survival book.

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

I go to school full time at Santa Monica College.

What is your fantasy occupation?

A Research position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

When did you first discover KCRW?

I was getting tired of hearing the same Top 40 songs on the radio. Channel surfing on the radio and heard Press Play in the afternoon- the dial hasn’t moved since.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

Since I go to Santa Monica College, I thought it would be nice to volunteer with the station.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I started volunteering last fall. I’m currently at the front desk answering and routing calls. I’ve been in that position for ~3 months

Favorite volunteer moment?

It has to be The Night on Broadway silent disco. It was something I didn’t know I wanted.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

“Hi mom and dad, it’s me!”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

Sylvan Esso’s What Now album

Never Know by 6LACK

Skeleton Key by Kenzie May

20:17 by Olafur Arnalds and, Nils Frahm

Favorite book, movie?

Death by Black Hole by Neil deGrasse Tyson

I most recently saw Blue Jay.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?

I like computer programming, and playing video games like The Witcher 3.

What does KCRW mean to you?

KCRW is where I come for news. Being able to listen to both sides of an argument without worrying of the host belittling or cutting them off is one of my many joys of the station. Great interview questions, topics and discussions to the point I feel guilty for those who have not heard of the station.

David is superstar and we’re so lucky to have him at the station!
