KCRW’s January Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Vincent Nguyen. He is an event all-star and is on a path to success. He’s already accomplished a lot here with energy and positivity. Keep it up!

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?

I grew up in Pasadena and I have one older brother and the most inspirational parents life can give you.

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

5 is a lot (jeez) but I have to say the most important thing is to have my bass guitar with me at all times. It’s gonna be the one thing that keeps me sane and a great way to handle my emotions. I guess the other things I’d have, in no order, is an endless supply of Limon Lays and In-N-Out burgers, all existing and future episodes of “Rick and Morty,” and a some sun block because I burn easily.

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

I am a high school sports reporter for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune by day, and I occasionally gig at bars and restaurants with my band by night.

What is your fantasy occupation?

Professional soccer announcer!

When did you first discover KCRW?

Don’t really remember, but it was probably in high school when my brother would pick me up or drive me around to places. I do remember hearing Steve Chiotakis’ smooth, silky voice delivering the news!

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

I just stumbled upon it on the website. I was probably looking for a job at the time and just found out that I could volunteer to do cool things so I said why not.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I volunteer for movie screenings and any events that happen around L.A. – the latest one being the L.A. Zoo! I’ve been a volunteer since October and it’s been a blast.

Favorite volunteer moment?

Playing Giant Jenga at the L.A. Zoo was fun!

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

I freaking love you, Kobe Bryant.

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

“Impossible” by Travi$ Scott. That beat hits the spot every damn time. “Pyramids” by Frank Ocean and “Chloroform” by Phoenix are honorable mentions.

Favorite book, movie?

Not sure on favorite book, but favorite movie is definitely Pulp Fiction.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?

Spending time with my friends, rehearsing with the band, playing FIFA and watching Ronaldinho highlights.

What does KCRW mean to you?

It’s a gateway for some great and hidden cultures in and around Los Angeles and a fantastic resource for news and journalism all in one sick, beautiful radio station!

Vince I had no idea you were such a soccer aficionado! Hope you are able to really belt out a good “GOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLL” – it will really catapult your future career. Thanks for all you do around here!
