KCRW’s February Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Zach! He started his volunteer journey at KCRW during the 2016 Summer Marketing Internship. He is always helpful and friendly to everyone. Zach really made a name for himself during the holiday season when he single-handedly covered most of the Christmas/New Years music shows. While most volunteers went on vacation, Zach donated his time and hung out with all the DJs – Anne Litt especially loved his attention to detail. Of course! Zach is absolutely reliable and we’re a much stronger team since he’s joined.

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?

I grew up in Simi Valley, which is about an hour away from Santa Monica. I have a brother and a sister, and also a tortoise named Shelldon (I got him when I was in elementary school and I thought I was so creative for naming a tortoise Shelldon).

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

  1. A very large bag of Flamin’ Hot Funyuns
  2. A massive supply of iced tea (I don’t know how we would keep it iced but we’ll figure it out)
  3. Headphones
  4. Coconut-powered wifi router (assuming this is a stereotypical island with coconuts)
  5. A book called “How to Survive on a Deserted Island”

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

I’m a business student at USC and I’m also interning at a marketing company in West Hollywood.

What is your fantasy occupation?

I really want to end up having a business of my own, the only problem is I haven’t had any good ideas yet (I do have about 17 incredibly bad ideas, though).

When did you first discover KCRW?

Around senior year of high school. I got tired of listening to the same music all the time on other stations and I went in search of one which was being a little more creative with their programming. Once I found out what KCRW was all about, I was hooked and have been ever since.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

Last spring I started looking for opportunities with companies I felt passionately about and KCRW was at the top of my list! I hopped on the website and saw how easy it was to get involved at the events around town and got on the volunteer list!

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I volunteer at various street team activations at events around the area and I also substitute for production assistants whenever there are openings, usually on weekends.

Favorite volunteer moment?

When I was volunteering for one of the Twilight Concerts at the Santa Monica pier, Jason Bentley’s mom came over to us and gave us cookies (which I think she grabbed from the VIP area). It was so nice of her and I was still pretty new at the time so I thought it was pretty cool to meet Jason’s mom.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

“Please send pizza to Zach Lunchick at the KCRW studio”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

My FAVORITE song right now is ‘Katchi’ by Nick Waterhouse and Leon Bridges. I was the production assistant for Dan Wilcox on his Best Of 2016 show and he played this song and I’m pretty sure my life will never be the same. It is so good… so good.

Favorite book, movie?

I absolutely refuse to choose a favorite movie, however, some my top three are (in no particular order):

The Big Lebowski

There Will Be Blood

Inherent Vice

As for books, one I enjoy is ‘Light in August’ by William Faulkner. I really love William’s writing style even though half the time it makes no sense at all and I’m completely lost.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?

I really love hiking and geocaching. I haven’t had a lot of time to do outdoorsy things recently, but ideally, that’s how I spend my downtime.

What does KCRW mean to you?

KCRW has been a place where I have discovered a lot of amazing music and even more amazing people. I am so thrilled I get to work with all of these amazing and talented people on nearly a weekly basis.
