KCRW’s February Volunteer of the Month!

Written by

Jim came to my rescue last year when I was looking for some help on a project requiring someone who was tech savvy, had great attention to detail and, most of all, a curious spirit with good instincts. I found all of that in Jim. He was 100% invested from the day he started and has provided a tremendous amount of assistance. He also made many of our year-end top 10 Music Blog posts possible, even spending time on nights and weekends so we could get them all ready before the holidays. He’s ready for any task we throw at him and we’re so lucky he’s chosen to dedicate his time to KCRW!

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings?
I was born and raised in Tucson, AZ and I have one older brother.

What is your current occupation?
A little bit of everything. It pays to be a Jack of All Trades here in Southern California, but a bit a of an entrepreneur, business owner, publisher, and musician to name a few.

What is your fantasy occupation?
I still have vivid memories of my first time watching Jimi Hendrix on TV as a small child. Ever since that day the answer to that question has always been rockstar!

When did you first discover KCRW?
A little over a year ago when I first moved to Los Angeles. I did some research on non-commercial stations and KCRW quickly became my favorite.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I volunteered at the community radio station in Tucson for about three years before moving to LA. Along the way I came to love independent/community radio and what it stands for. So when I moved out here I naturally wanted continue being involved with independent radio.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I am currently a volunteer at the front desk, and I also out help Rachel Reynolds with Music PR on a weekly basis. I started with KCRW with the summer internship program this past June, so it’s about 8 or 9 months now.

Favorite volunteer moment?
My favorite moment has been getting to see some of my work and contributions go live on the KCRW website. Also, what are Wednesdays without Snack Club!

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
Good evening to all the wonderful ladies and gentlemen out there in Radioland…I hope you are enjoying the music tonight here on KCRW. (In my deepest possible tone of voice of course).

What song have you hit repeat on lately?
Not any song in particular but I’ve been groovin’ on a lot of Flying Lotus lately.

Favorite book, movie?
So many great books and movies that it’s hard to choose, but I’ll say On the Road and Goodfellas.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?
I enjoy surfing, playing basketball, hiking, playing a multitude of instruments, writing and listening to music.

What does KCRW mean to you?
KCRW is quite an eclectic mix and conglomeration of culture, fresh music, social events, food and so much more. I think the most important part however is its place in creating a strong sense of community. So to me it means community, and it serves an important role in helping to connect the people of Los Angeles. It’s easy for us to get lost living in a city as big and diverse as ours, but KCRW aids in bridging the gap between the many people, neighborhoods and freeways of Los Angeles to create a strong sense of community.

Jim has always been a pillar of a person, not just because he stands very tall, but because he composes himself professionally, confidently, and with strength. Beyond being punctual and efficient, this guy just gets it! He’s a solid dude and we are definitely glad to have him on the team.
