KCRW’s April Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Danielle! She started her volunteer journey at KCRW during the 2016 Summer Marketing Internship. Danielle instantly stood out for her genuine love of the station and eagerness to help. She was always up for helping the street team, interacting with the community, or helping set up/break down. Danielle would come to most Summer Events, even if she wasn’t volunteering! She quickly made her way to the front desk then graduating to be a production assistant to DJs. She currently helps Liza Richardson on Saturdays and Anthony Valadez on Monday nights. She also subs in often and is still helpful whenever she can! Danielle also volunteers at events- she’s a professional!

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?

I grew up in Chatsworth, California. The San Fernando Valley might be a better title and more well known. I have two brothers, 24 and 10 years old, and a sister who is 22-years-old. No pets!

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

  1. Unlimited amount of fresh water
  2. Wi-fi
  3. A solid speaker setup
  4. Laptop
  5. Some shelter would be tight

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

I am a barista at Starbucks and also coach volleyball every now and then, usually during school breaks. I am also taking classes at Pierce College in the Valley.

What is your fantasy occupation?

To write and direct movies.

When did you first discover KCRW?

I want to say around 2011 was when I first noticed the station. I was going to the free events, Chinatown Summer Nights being my favorite, and that’s what turned me on to listening to the station more so I could know what KCRW was all about.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

I was waiting to volunteer at KCRW for quite some time but didn’t have the schedule until recently. Once I finally decided to make my first move I just went online and applied for the Summer Marketing Team. Such a fun time!

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I have been a Production Assistant for the past 6 months; helping out DJs as a cover assistant, and now permanently for Liza Richardson every other weekend. I occasionally still help with events, too.

Favorite volunteer moment?

Tough choice but I would say going to Desert Daze with fellow KCRW volunteers to promote the station and give people face paintings! I got to see a lot of my favorite artists at the festival and had an unforgettable experience.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

“I’m Danielle Mamath, here with you for the next couple of hours on KCRW, Stay tuned!”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

I am absolutely obsessed with Steve Lacy’s new demo! Six funky tracks I’ve had on repeat since the release.

Favorite book, movie?

My favorite book series is Stieg Larsson’s Millennium (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and my favorite movie is Trainspotting.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?

Take photos and videotape my friends doing anything, really. I’m always looking for a story to tell.

What does KCRW mean to you?

KCRW introduced me to an entire community of people who are open-minded and sharing ideas all the time. KCRW shares music that makes me happy, stories that make me think, and people that are in my lives every day.

You’re one of a kind, Danielle! We appreciate you and all the time you dedicate to KCRW!
