Harold Cane is KCRW’s February Volunteer of the Month!

Written by

Where did you grow up and are you an only child?
I grew up in Agoura. Yes, I am an actual native of California.  We still exist.  I have one younger brother.

What is your current occupation?
I work in the music licensing business and don’t have an official title. I think I might be a manager or director.

What is your fantasy occupation?
A comedy writer on a television show.

When did you first discover KCRW?
A friend of mine back in the late 80s turned me onto the show Snap!  That show featured a lot of the music my friend liked that he turned me onto such as Prefab Sprout, Martin Stephenson and The Smiths.  In Agoura, KCRW did not come in strong, but I managed to live with the static.  I always looked forward to driving into the valley so I could listen with a strong signal.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
It always seemed impossible to volunteer at KCRW unless I was unemployed because you had to start out in the front office during business hours.  Good fortune rained upon me in 2001 when I was laid off from my IT job. It may have been in early 2002 when I remembered that I should be volunteering at KCRW asap before a full-time job got in the way.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
Currently, I do production assistance on Raul Campo’s show (formerly Nocturna) every other Thursday. I’ve been with RC1 for maybe 8 years on his show? I don’t keep track of time very well.

Favorite volunteer moment?
Some moments that stand out are many of the unique phone calls I have taken.  There’ve been some good ones!  However, I always enjoy when I’m doing a ticket giveaway and I tell someone that they are a winner and the caller gets excited because it’s the first time they have ever won anything.  Adding to that, the tickets are for a band or artist the caller really loves.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
Please visit the website http://www.atasteofdawn.net/ that my great friend Dawn runs. I apologize for plugging, but that’s all I could think of at the moment. (Good one, Harold!)

What song have you hit repeat on lately?
One favorite has transitioned into another: “Lunar” by David Guetta then “You Won’t Let Me” by Rachael Yamagata.

Favorite book, movie?
Book: “In Search of Captain Zero: A Surfer’s Road Trip Beyond the End of the Road”(Thanks Connie!)
Movie: The Big Lewbowski

Favorite thing to do outside the station (hobbies, recreation, etc.)?
I enjoy surfing, yoga and riding my bike to work daily and to the bars on weekends, baking baklava, cooking, going on destination-less adventures with friends and going to concerts. I especially enjoy free concerts!  Searching out and trying new restaurants is fun and I love going for dim sum on the weekends in San Gabriel.

What does KCRW mean to you?
It means opportunities.  There are so many opportunities to be informed, to be entertained by new music and to learn. Being that I volunteer at the station, KCRW has given me opportunities to make friends and find my last two jobs.  I always will feel indebted to KCRW.

Harold, Harold!  KCRW’s nighttime music studio scene would not be the same without him.  The night folks are a little family and Harold is the big brother.  Always welcoming and ready to guide the newbies.  Thanks Harold!
