August Volunteer of the Month – Lori Schaffhauser

Written by
Meet Lori! She’s been kicking butt around here recently. She is focusing in on music, her passion. It’s so awesome someone can follow their dreams and hop right in and learn what they want in new areas. What makes Lori special? She is super enthusiastic about getting involved in all the awesome volunteer projects we have available and signs up in a heartbeat with a smile!

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?
I grew up in Northern New Jersey, in a tiny town called Bernardsville.
No siblings – I’m an only child.
I have a wonderful 9 year old German Shepherd named Indy.  He’s my pride and joy! (Photo of Indy attached!)

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?
My Dog
Access to the internet
My favorite music & some device to play it. (crankshaft powered record player perhaps?)
A really sharp knife
A bunch of books

What is your current occupation?
Up until recently, I worked in television development, creating and producing both scripted and reality shows.  Some highlights from that career involved my time at CBS – I was involved with the development of “How I Met Your Mother”, “The Big Bang Theory”, and “Rules Of Engagement”. I’m now transitioning my career to follow my passion and work in the music business.

What is your fantasy occupation?
Music Supervisor.

When did you first discover KCRW?
It’s been so long I don’t remember exactly how, but, I used to listen to KCRW in the car during my long commutes to & from work when I first lived in LA.  I worked in the valley and lived in Manhattan Beach, and I couldn’t wait to get in the car after a long day to drive home listening to the cool sounds on KCRW.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
My friends and I would talk about the great stuff we heard on KCRW and bands we’d discovered thanks to the station.  At one point one of them told me that she volunteered for a pledge drive – so I signed up for the next one!

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I’m a studio production assistant for Morning Becomes Eclectic once a week – I’ve been doing that just over a month.  And I work in the music bungalow once a week since about April, and I’m a part of this summer’s marketing internship program, representing the station at events all over LA.

Favorite volunteer moment?
I’ve had many already… Seeing live performances during MBE is always awesome, getting to know the wonderful people at the station has been fantastic, I love representing the station at events and talking to people about it – and of course being named a “volunteer of the month” is a highlight!

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on  the air, what would it be?
“Thanks so much for listening to and supporting KCRW – you’ll be hearing some great music today!”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?
I’m listening to the new Jamie XX album “In Colour” a LOT! I love it.  Also Glass Animals – everything on “Zaba” is on repeat for me lately.  I also love Disclosure – can’t wait for their new album.  Courtney Barnett’s album really intrigues me.  And the new Baio record has my attention.

Favorite book, movie?
My favorite book is “A Gift From The Sea” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh.  In it, she draws analogies to life from shells she finds on a beach.  It’s the kind of book that applies across many areas of life and one you can read over and over again – the ideas will connect with you differently depending on what is going on in your life at the time you read it.
Movie – an oldie but goodie – Ghostbusters..

Favorite thing to do outside the station?
I love to play sports!  I row crew for the Los Angeles Rowing Club –  I’m in a boat that is currently training to race in the “Head Of The Charles” regatta in Boston in October.  I also play tennis and volleyball.
I go to a lot of concerts, I enjoy hiking with my dog, eating out & discovering new restaurants.
And I’m a huge fan of the LA Kings – I have season tickets so you’ll often find me at Staples Center during hockey season.

What does KCRW mean to you?
So many things, and more all the time!  I turn to KCRW for expertly curated content that’s entertaining and informative, it’s my guide to cool stuff to do and see in LA, it’s my go-to for new music, and now it’s a place where I love to be, hanging out with and learning from really cool, interesting, smart, nice people!

Lori you rock.  Keep on keeping on!
